Like most musicians, I have played with a variety of people and in more than a couple of different bands. Having done so, I can assure you that every musician has their favorite group, or song, and for me that group was At Random. All these years later and it is still At Random that has a hold of my heart, and the memories I cling to the hardest.
After taking a long time off from writing or performing music, a good friend of mine from Nashville, Shiro Onedera, sent an email saying he had an idea he wanted to talk about. His idea was to work on producing new versions of songs I had written throughout the years.
At first, I was a little skeptical but a couple of weeks later he sent me two “reimagined versions” of recordings I had made years before. I liked them so much that I changed my mind and jumped into the deep waters with Shiro.
About a year and five hundred versions later, I wake up to another email. It is from Shiro and he has a new idea he wants to talk about. So, I dial him up and he hits me with another monster idea. He wants me to contact the remaining At Random members and get them involved with the project. Admittedly, I was skeptical again even while my pulse was rising.
It took me a couple of weeks to reproduce one of Jon F Anderson’s songs. I gave him a call and told him I had “an idea I wanted to talk to him about” (thank you Shiro). So, I sent the updated version of his song off to him, and here we are. “Putting the band back together” and writing a blog about the backstory of each song.
We will also be offering recollections into our interactions with some real characters and the Detroit area music world as we knew it to be. The first new release from ANDERSON HUNT titled, At Random Volume 1, will be hitting the streaming platforms soon.
In the meantime, you can connect to the other songs we currently have streaming, including IT’S CHRISTMAS AGAIN. I wrote that song a LONG time ago and I hope you enjoy it while “I cling to those memories, especially the ones about you”!

AI STATEMENT
Jon and I have been musical partners for many years, sometimes together, sometimes off doing our own thing. After decades apart we are back at it working on revised versions of early compositions and creating new material. This time we’re adding a new element to our music: we’re using AI to enhance and assist in the creation of new sounds and jamming with robots.
We understand that some people, both in and out of the industry, are concerned about the use of AI in entertainment. We want to share our thoughts on the topic.
If you have watched a movie in the last decade, you’ve already enjoyed AI in art. In music artists and studios are already using AI in mastering. Some artists have embraced AI-generated tracks—like when Randy Travis’s voice was recreated with technology.
Jon and I have spent decades writing, recording and performing original music and we have copyrights (and the stories) to go along with that work. If anyone prefers a purely human approach, feel free to book us some studio time or send a check- we’ll get a bunch of really talented humans to help us lay down these new tracks old school style.
For those who worry that AI is the death of human creation, consider this: the first drum machines were made nearly 1300 years ago in the Middle East and the machine entertained royalty. The first fully programmed drum machine was released in 1972 and by the late 1980’s sampling and sequencing loops were common. Drum machines, synthesizers and sequencers, have influenced hip hop for decades without causing the end of heartfelt music. Musicians have been using computers for nearly 40 years, starting with tape loops and manipulating audio recordings. Still, the world keeps turning and new solo artists and bands keep writing and touring.
Just as it is unreasonable to reject sampling because it replaces humans by taking the sound created by other artists, it is unreasonable to think that AI doesn’t have a place in the music world. The Beatles just won the first Grammy ever presented for a song using AI when they released a song with two of our heroes, the deceased John Lennon and George Harrison.
What Jon and I won’t be doing is turning out “AI Slop”. Every song release is written, produced and mastered by us and our human partners. We will also be adding human vocals or instruments to some of our music. So, while we embrace the future, we will never just prompt AI to write a song and call it our own. We have no need to do so.
In closing here are some “I remember when” moments:
I remember when people were against cars replacing horses and buggies.
I remember when flying surpassed traveling by train
I remember when computers shrank from the size of a building to the size of a phone.
I remember when phones had a cord and COULD NOT BE CARRIED AROUND…OMG
AI is here and we’re excited to see where we can go together. We hope you’ll enjoy the ride and give us a listen…we think you’ll like it.
Robert L Hunt
Jon Anderson says:
Robert, I have to say, you hit the nail on the head. Like you, I’ve played with my fair share of of quality musicians. Starting at the sweet age of 13 when my brother handed me his guitar, I immediately knew that playing would be a life long passion! I’ve met and performed with highy accomplished musicians, some good people, some not. But, all had that passion. It’s like a brothethood. Creative people seem to find each other. But, of all the song writers / musicians I’ve been associated with over the years there’s only been one Robert L Hunt! Our connection has been magical! It never mattered if we worked together every day or didn’t see each other for several years, we could always bounce a song idea off each other and put it together in a matter of minutes. The connection is unreal! Being back together as Anderson Hunt is another segment in my lifes journey. Every day brings new challenges as I go into my studio, pull up a song and start composing / recording new guitar tracks. What a great way to enhance your life! Writing songs by exchanging music files with each other is an incredible experience. Thank You Technology! Everyday I wonder what we’ll come up with next. What does the future hold? Stay tuned and we’ll find out together!

Mike says:
It’s Christmas again is a great new song. A modern holiday song is a breath of fresh air.
Ed Petrus says:
Now that it’s Christmas season, my wife is always looking for a song to cheer us and the family up for the long holidays. I ran into this one on Spotify called ITS CHRISTMAS AGAIN . I’m reaching out to you to let you know how much we have enjoyed listening to this very cheerful holiday song. We are looking to hear more from you. thanks
David Laupmanis says:
It was cello that first got my musical attention. Then in the UK one afternoon, my sister put a guitar in my hands and that was the end of my cello career. I attended Wayne State University’s music program in Detroit being taught guitar by Joe Fava. Joe was a classical & jazz guy. I was hired by my first rock band since I could play Leonard Skinner, Jethro Tull, or Stairway to Heaven leads note for note. I guess all that ear training paid off.
Wanting to push the music envelope I moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music. Ate a lot of Back Bay Pizza while building better chops. A few years of that & I had music theory burn out. Back in Ann Arbor Michigan working at the Sound Service music gear repair shop I had the good fortune of meeting Ken Keyes whom introduced me to the At Random band. For me they were the perfect antidote for putting the music to life. To play with musicians of the caliber of Dave, Larry, Jon, and Robert was a gas. I am grateful to all of them for sharing their amazing talent with me & am thrilled that Robert and Jon are keeping that spirit alive. You guys ROCK.
Robert L Hunt says:
That ear training and Berklee College of Music certainly was apparent from the first moment we played together. Being reminded of this makes me want to move Hawaii to the top of the next release. Thanks, DL. Get ready to lay some tracks down!
Shiro Onedera says:
Some chase dreams. Some chase titles. I love chasing history. However, one of the few things I love more than chasing history is… making history.
With the release of Anderson Hunt’s album, “At Random – Volume 1”, I believe that music history will have been made. Releasing tracks that were originally recorded (but unreleased) in the 70s/80s alongside modern interpretations and new material with the assistance of AI is indeed historic. However, this music tells such a rich and compelling story that should not be missed. It is my opinion that the lyrics, the music, the vocals… they all are bonded as strongly now as they may have been 4 or 5 decades ago. At least the music leads me to think so…
My hope is that the release of this album (along with future releases) will inspire others to not only create great music, but to “get the band back together” and recreate with new tools, new mindsets, and renewed vigor. It has been a pleasure being a small part of this project. Thanks especially to Robert Hunt for including me. His uncanny ability to frustrate the hell out of me is surpassed only by his genuine care and concern for friends, family and those in need.
